Dr. John Spencer Ellis Reveals Why Qualified Executives Are Being Eliminated From C-Suite Searches Before the First Interview

Reputation Return Co-Founder explains how online research now determines which leadership candidates advance—and why most executives are losing opportunities they never knew existed

LAS VEGAS, NV – Dr. John Spencer Ellis, Co-Founder and Chief Technologist at Reputation Return, today issued a warning to senior executives: the criteria for C-suite advancement have fundamentally shifted, and online reputation now determines which candidates receive consideration before qualifications are ever evaluated.

Executive recruiters, board members, and private equity firms conduct comprehensive digital research on leadership candidates as an immediate first step—not a final due diligence measure. Executives with inadequate digital presence, unaddressed negative content, or search results that fail to reflect their achievements are eliminated during this invisible screening phase, often without any awareness they were under consideration.

“I’ve consulted with executives who lost transformational career opportunities and never understood why,” said Dr. Ellis. “They had the credentials, the experience, and the track record. What they lacked was the online presence that today’s decision-makers require before advancing any candidate to interviews. By the time they realized reputation mattered, the opportunities had already gone to competitors who understood the game.”

The Invisible Screening Process

The executive hiring process has undergone a structural transformation that most senior leaders haven’t recognized.

A decade ago, digital research occurred late in the evaluation process—after interviews, after reference checks, as a final confirmation step. Executives could demonstrate their value in person before online content entered the equation.

Today, the sequence has reversed entirely. Recruiters Google candidates within minutes of identifying them. Board members search potential CEO names before the first committee discussion. Investors evaluate executive digital footprints before taking initial meetings. The online research that once served as confirmation now serves as filtration.

This front-loaded screening creates a pattern of silent elimination. Executives removed from consideration due to online findings receive no feedback. They don’t know they were being considered. They don’t know they were rejected. They simply never hear about opportunities that might have transformed their careers.

“The rejection happens in a browser window, not a boardroom,” Dr. Ellis explained. “A recruiter searches your name, spends ninety seconds scanning results, and makes a determination. If what they find raises questions—or fails to provide answers—they move to the next candidate. You never receive a call explaining that your search results cost you the opportunity.”

What Decision-Makers Discover During Research

When recruiters and board members research executive candidates, they evaluate multiple dimensions of online presence:

Media Visibility: Coverage in business publications, industry media, and mainstream press. Executives with earned media presence demonstrate the recognition and credibility that leadership positions demand. Those without visible coverage appear less established regardless of actual accomplishments.

Professional Authority: LinkedIn presence, published thought leadership, speaking engagements, and industry association involvement. Sparse professional presence raises questions about whether candidates have the profile expected at senior leadership levels.

Reputation History: News coverage of past controversies, legal matters, regulatory issues, or organizational failures. Content from situations resolved years ago continues ranking in search results, shaping perception long after circumstances changed.

Third-Party Validation: Expert quotes, board memberships, awards, and recognition from authoritative sources. This external validation confirms claims made in resumes and interviews. Its absence makes achievements harder to verify.

Digital Judgment: Social media content, public statements, and online behavior that may indicate values misalignment or judgment concerns. Posts from years past resurface during executive searches with damaging consequences.

AI-Generated Summaries: Responses from ChatGPT, Perplexity, and similar tools when asked about candidates. AI synthesizes available web content into summaries that increasingly influence executive evaluation.

The Generational Disadvantage

Executives who built careers before online presence mattered face a structural disadvantage against competitors who developed digital visibility throughout their professional journeys.

A senior executive with twenty-five years of exceptional performance but minimal online presence competes against a less experienced candidate with strong digital visibility, published content, and authoritative search results. The senior executive’s superior track record becomes invisible when research reveals no evidence of it.

“Accomplished executives often tell me their work speaks for itself,” Dr. Ellis noted. “They don’t realize that their work now speaks through Google. A brilliant career that isn’t documented online is a career that decision-makers cannot verify. When boards compare candidates, the one whose excellence is visible online appears more credible than the one whose excellence requires trust.”

This disadvantage intensifies for executives pursuing opportunities outside their established networks. Within existing professional circles, reputation is known through personal experience. Outside those circles, reputation exists only as what search results reveal.

The Compensation Connection

Online reputation impacts not just whether executives receive opportunities but the financial terms those opportunities include.

Industry data suggests that executives with strong digital presence command salary premiums ranging from 10-20% compared to candidates with equivalent qualifications but weaker online visibility. The perception of demand and market value that strong presence creates translates directly into compensation leverage.

Executives with reputation vulnerabilities face the opposite dynamic. Limited options force acceptance of suboptimal packages. Compromised search results reduce negotiating power. Career economics suffer even when opportunities eventually materialize.

Additionally, boards and investors increasingly evaluate CEO and C-suite digital presence as a component of company reputation. Executive leaders with strong personal brands enhance organizational credibility. Those with reputation concerns create liability that affects not just hiring but ongoing compensation, retention, and succession planning.

Why Surface-Level Solutions Fail

Many executives attempt to address online presence through tactical measures: refreshing LinkedIn profiles, engaging executive branding consultants, or commissioning professional photography.

These approaches address symptoms rather than systems. LinkedIn optimization improves one platform while search results include dozens of others. Professional photography enhances one image while content across the web shapes overall perception. Executive branding develops positioning language but doesn’t generate the third-party validation that establishes genuine authority.

Comprehensive executive reputation management requires systematic approach: complete audit of search results across all platforms, identification and remediation of negative or problematic content, strategic building of authoritative third-party presence through earned media and professional placement, and optimization for both traditional search engines and emerging AI systems.

“Executives who compete successfully treat online reputation as career infrastructure, not personal marketing,” Dr. Ellis emphasized. “They invest systematically in presence across platforms that influence their industry, cultivate earned media that builds credibility, monitor what appears during searches, and address problems before those problems cost opportunities. They recognize that executive success now requires excellence in both performance and visibility.”

Dr. John Spencer Ellis Names the Seven Things Wrecking Men's Sleep — and Most of Them Are Not Insomnia

Men sleeping under six hours were more than four times as likely to develop a cold after direct viral exposure in a controlled study. A Las Vegas longevity expert breaks down the seven actual causes, the hygiene and environment fixes, and why the majority of a man’s testosterone is produced while he is unconscious.

LAS VEGAS, NV — Ask a man over 45 why he sleeps badly and he will usually say insomnia, stress, or that he has simply never been a good sleeper.

According to Dr. John Spencer Ellis, an internationally recognized authority on men’s health, longevity and human performance, the real causes are more specific than that — and most of them are fixable.

“Sleep is not one item on the list alongside training and nutrition,” said Dr. Ellis. “It is the multiplier on both. The research is unusually direct — the opening line of a JAMA paper on the subject states plainly that the majority of the daily testosterone release in men occurs during sleep. A man optimizing his training while sleeping six broken hours is renovating a house with a cracked foundation.”

The seven

1. Untreated obstructive sleep apnea. Common in men over 40, treatable, and diagnosed in a fraction of the men who have it. The same JAMA paper notes that sleep fragmentation and obstructive sleep apnea are associated with reduced testosterone. “If you snore or wake unrefreshed, get screened,” said Dr. Ellis. “No protocol overcomes it, and for some men that single step is the whole answer.”

2. Alcohol used as the off switch. It shortens the time to fall asleep and destroys sleep architecture — the opposite of what a man needs. “It is the most common sleep aid in America and among the worst.”

3. Chronic work stress. Cortisol and sleep form a closed loop: elevated cortisol fragments sleep, and fragmented sleep raises cortisol further. Neither resolves without deliberate intervention.

4. Nocturia from an enlarged prostate. Benign prostatic hyperplasia appears in roughly 27.8 percent of older men in prevalence data, and waking two or three times a night to urinate fractures sleep architecture regardless of time in bed. “This is a urologist conversation men delay for years.”

5. Late caffeine. With a five-to-six-hour half-life, a 3 p.m. coffee still has meaningful caffeine circulating at 9 p.m.

6. The weekend catch-up. Waking at 6:00 on weekdays and 9:00 at weekends produces the physiological equivalent of a three-hour time zone shift twice a week. The circadian system never settles.

7. Age itself. Deep sleep declines with age, so the same seven hours delivers less recovery at 55 than it did at 25 — and growth hormone release and the bulk of tissue repair occur during deep sleep.

Sleep hygiene, explained properly

“Sleep hygiene has become a phrase people nod at without knowing what it means,” said Dr. Ellis. “It is simply the set of behaviors that make sleep more likely, and it stops being optional after 45.”

Fix the wake time, not the bedtime. You cannot force sleep onset. You can set an alarm. A fixed wake time seven days a week — with a maximum one hour of weekend drift — pulls the bedtime into place within about a week, because sleep pressure builds on schedule.

Get morning daylight within an hour of waking, outdoors, no sunglasses. This sets the melatonin timing that makes tonight easier.

Aim for seven to nine hours in bed, counted as time in bed rather than time asleep. The gap between them is real and typically an hour or more.

Cap caffeine by early afternoon. No alcohol within three hours of bed.

Dim the lights and put screens down in the final hour.

The immune connection is not vague

This is where Dr. Ellis says the evidence is strongest and least appreciated.

Prather and colleagues, publishing in Sleep in 2015, tracked 164 healthy adults with wrist actigraphy for seven consecutive days, then quarantined them and administered rhinovirus nasal drops directly.

Compared with those sleeping more than seven hours, participants sleeping under five hours had an odds ratio of 4.50 for developing a clinical cold, and those sleeping five to six hours an odds ratio of 4.24. The association held independent of pre-challenge antibody levels, demographics, season, BMI, psychological variables and health practices.

“Everyone got the same virus, up the nose, under controlled conditions,” said Dr. Ellis. “The short sleepers were more than four times as likely to actually get sick. That is not a questionnaire finding. That is a controlled viral challenge.”

The vaccination literature points the same direction, with work by Spiegel, Sheridan and Van Cauter in JAMA, and by Lange and colleagues, showing sleep influences antibody response to immunization.

Cognition and appearance

Cognition. Overnight clearance of metabolic waste from brain tissue occurs predominantly during sleep. In Stanford research, athletes extended to ten hours in bed for five to seven weeks improved skilled performance measures by roughly 9 percent, with faster sprints and improved mood; a separate study found sleep extension improved reaction time by 15 percent.

“Men working seventy-hour weeks on six hours of sleep are making their most consequential decisions in their least capable state,” said Dr. Ellis.

Appearance. Sleep debt registers under the eyes within days. Elevated cortisol and alcohol drive facial fluid retention and inflammation. And dermal collagen — already declining roughly one percent per year after 30 — receives less repair support when deep sleep is compromised.

“Men come to me about how they look and stay for what the bloodwork does. The mirror is simply the part they check daily, and sleep is the fastest thing that moves it.”

The sleep environment

Dr. Ellis is specific about the room itself.

Cold. Core body temperature must fall to initiate and maintain sleep. Roughly 65 to 68°F suits most men, and a warm shower an hour before bed helps by driving peripheral heat loss afterward.

Dark. Genuinely dark — blackout treatment, and every standby LED covered or removed.

Quiet, or consistently masked with white or brown noise, which is preferable to intermittent silence broken by traffic.

The bed is for sleep. Not the laptop, not the phone, not the television. “You are training an association, and most men have trained the opposite one.”

Separate beds are not a failure. If a partner’s snoring or schedule is fragmenting your sleep several nights a week, that is a practical problem with a practical solution, and men should stop treating it as a verdict on the relationship.

How each program addresses it

The Health, Longevity and Aesthetic Optimization Program for Men 40+ treats sleep as the first domino rather than an afterthought. The 90-day personalized engagement opens with comprehensive intake covering sleep patterns, stress load, alcohol intake and medications; flags sleep apnea screening as a physician referral where indicated; and sequences the entire protocol so sleep and alcohol stabilize before training load increases. Bloodwork guidance alongside the client’s own physician covers morning testosterone, hs-CRP, glucose and thyroid — the markers sleep debt moves. Twelve weekly one-on-one sessions supply the accountability that turns a fixed wake time into an actual habit.

The Escape the Rat Race Coaching Program solves the problem the first program cannot. “For a lot of men the sleep advice is fine and the schedule makes it impossible,” said Dr. Ellis. “Sixty-hour weeks, red-eye flights, calls across time zones, and no authority over their own calendar. That is not a discipline failure. It is structural, and it needs a structural answer.” That program converts decades of accumulated expertise into a simpler, location-flexible income model that returns control of the calendar.

“Many men run them in sequence. Fix the sleep first, because the larger decisions get made by a man who is rested — then restructure the work that was destroying it.”

Dr. Ellis is a coach and educator, not a physician. He does not diagnose, treat or prescribe. Sleep apnea, insomnia, restless legs and prostate conditions are medical matters requiring licensed clinicians.

SwissWatchExpo Urges Buyers to Separate Price Indexes from Purchase Decisions as Secondary Watch Market Data Diverges

Atlanta-based pre-owned luxury watch retailer publishes guidance for buyers navigating conflicting market indexes, a multi-year correction in steel sports references, and rising retail prices

ATLANTA, GA — SwissWatchExpo, an Atlanta-based retailer of pre-owned luxury watches, today issued guidance for consumers evaluating a pre-owned purchase in a market where widely cited price indexes are producing conflicting signals and where several years of correction have changed what a fair price looks like.

The guidance is based on the company’s experience buying, selling, authenticating and servicing pre-owned luxury watches, including Rolex, Cartier, Omega, Patek Philippe, Audemars Piguet and other brands. The company maintains an inventory of more than 3,000 pre-owned luxury watches at its Atlanta facility.

Conflicting Signals from Market Indexes

Buyers researching a purchase in 2026 encounter a confusing picture. The Bloomberg Subdial Watch Index, which tracks the 50 most-traded timepieces by transaction value, gained 8% across 2025 and reached its highest level in more than two years in early 2026. Other trackers tell a different story. As of mid-August 2026, the Pricing Culture Rolex Index — which follows average list prices on leading secondary marketplaces — showed a decline of approximately 5% over 90 days and roughly 22% over twelve months.

Industry trade press has documented the divergence directly. Four widely followed trackers produced materially different readings of the same period in 2025, and one index issued a public correction after a data ingestion failure produced a false readout.

The company’s position is that these indexes measure different things — some track completed transactions, others track asking prices — and that neither is a substitute for evaluating the specific watch a buyer is considering.

A Market That Has Already Corrected

The broader context matters. Secondary market values for steel sports references have compressed substantially since the market peak in March 2022, with some models trading well below their peak valuations. At the same time, Rolex implemented its customary retail increase in January 2026.

That combination has produced an unfamiliar situation. For several references, particularly common Datejust configurations and older watches, a pre-owned example can now be purchased for less than a comparable model at retail. For others, the gap runs the other way: a steel Daytona carried a retail price of $16,900 in August 2026 while market data placed current examples at roughly twice that figure.

The practical implication is that no general statement about “the market” reliably predicts what any individual reference is worth.

Company Commentary

“The most expensive mistake we see is buying a watch because an index went up,” said Eugene Tutunikov, Chief Executive Officer at SwissWatchExpo. “An index is an average across thousands of transactions in wildly different conditions. It tells you nothing about the watch in front of you — whether the case has been overpolished, whether the movement is correct for the reference, whether the parts belong together. Those things determine what a specific watch is worth far more than a directional arrow on a chart does.”

Tutunikov added that the correction has changed what buyers should be asking.

“For most of the last several years, people bought watches expecting the price to go up. That framing did real damage, because it pushed buyers toward whatever was appreciating rather than what they actually wanted to own. A correction is an uncomfortable thing to live through, but it puts the focus back where it belongs. Buy the watch you want, at a price you can verify against completed sales, from someone who has actually opened it. If it appreciates, that is a pleasant surprise rather than the reason you bought it.”

Four Recommendations for Buyers

SwissWatchExpo recommends the following for anyone evaluating a pre-owned purchase in the current market:

1. Compare against completed sales, not asking prices. Asking prices reflect what sellers hope to receive. Completed transactions for the exact reference and condition reflect what the market has actually paid.

2. Check the retail price before assuming a premium. For a number of references, the assumption that pre-owned always costs less no longer holds — and for others, retail is now the cheaper path if an allocation is available.

3. Price the condition, not the model. Two examples of the same reference can differ by thousands of dollars based on polishing history, originality of components, service record and completeness. A model-level index cannot capture that.

4. Account for total cost. Service intervals, sales tax, shipping, and any restocking fee attached to a return all affect what the watch actually costs. A purchase price is not a total price.

Additional Resources

Buyers can review SwissWatchExpo’s Authenticity Guarantee or browse the company’s current pre-owned watch inventory. The company’s non-commissioned watch consultants answer questions from owners and prospective buyers regardless of whether a transaction is involved. Clients can also view the exact watch they are considering through a FaceTime consultation or an in-person appointment at SwissWatchExpo’s Atlanta showroom.

About SwissWatchExpo

SwissWatchExpo is an independent retailer of pre-owned luxury watches based in Atlanta, Georgia. Founded in 2009, the company purchases and physically holds its inventory rather than operating as a third-party marketplace, maintaining more than 3,000 watches onsite — each inspected and authenticated by its in-house team of watchmakers before being offered for sale.

SwissWatchExpo holds a 4.8 out of 5.0 rating across more than 7,000 reviews on Google, Shopper Approved, Yelp, Facebook and the BBB. The company has been profiled by Robb Report, Bloomberg, Barron’s, Forbes, The New York Times, The Wall Street Journal and Business Insider. SwissWatchExpo is not an authorized dealer of Rolex or any other watch brand; its watches and warranties are provided independently by SwissWatchExpo.

Market figures cited reflect publicly reported index data and retail pricing as of August 2026 and are subject to change. This release is educational in nature and does not constitute investment advice.

Buying a Luxury Watch This Holiday Season? Goldbro Timepieces Explains How to Time It Right and Skip the Seasonal Markup

As gift-season demand pushes watch prices higher, Las Vegas curator Aaron Klausman shares when to buy, when to wait, and how to avoid overpaying during the busiest stretch of the year.

LAS VEGAS — With the holiday shopping season underway and fine watches climbing gift lists everywhere, Goldbro Timepieces is helping consumers make a smarter, better-informed purchase. The company’s message is simple but valuable: the timing of a luxury watch purchase can influence the price nearly as much as the choice of watch itself, and knowing the market’s seasonal patterns can save buyers a substantial sum.

“There’s a rhythm to this market that most casual buyers never notice,” said Aaron Klausman, CEO of Goldbro Timepieces. “Demand rises and falls through the year, and so does pricing. If you know the pattern, you can buy at a smart moment, or at least walk into the holiday rush with your eyes open instead of overpaying under pressure.”

Why Holiday Prices Run Hot

Data on seasonal buying makes the pattern clear. As the holidays approach, demand for luxury watches as prestige gifts intensifies through October and November, with shoppers competing for the same in-demand models. That competition tends to hold secondary-market prices firm and moves quality inventory quickly, leaving buyers little leverage to negotiate.

“November is when value is hardest to find,” Klausman said. “You’ve got the maximum number of buyers chasing the same watches at the same time. Prices stay high, the good pieces disappear fast, and there’s pressure to commit before you’ve really researched. If getting the best price matters more to you than unwrapping it in December, that’s the month to be most careful.”

The Quiet Months Reward Patience

The bigger opportunity, according to Klausman, lies in the calmer stretches that bracket the holiday frenzy. Seasoned collectors deliberately favor times of lower demand and higher inventory, and two periods consistently stand out.

January leads the list. In the weeks after the holidays, many owners trade in current watches to help fund new purchases, sending a wave of high-quality pre-owned pieces into the market. With supply up and the crowds gone, buyers enjoy better selection and more room to negotiate. Late summer, around August, offers a similar lull and similar advantages for those willing to wait.

“If you can be patient, January is a gift to the smart buyer,” Klausman explained. “The market fills up with excellent trade-ins right when most people have stopped shopping. Less competition, more choice, better pricing, that’s the combination every experienced collector looks for.”

Buying a Gift This Season? Do It Wisely

For shoppers set on purchasing during the holidays, Klausman is quick to say the seasonal premium shouldn’t discourage them, but it should keep them disciplined.

“A fine watch is a truly special gift, and if this is the moment for you, embrace it,” he said. “Just be prepared. Decide on the exact reference in advance, learn what it’s genuinely been selling for, and don’t let holiday urgency talk you into overpaying or skipping authentication. The excitement of the season is exactly when people cut corners, and that’s how a wonderful gift becomes a costly mistake.”

He points to one clear holiday advantage of buying pre-owned: no waiting. “So many desirable new models sit behind long waitlists, which does you no good when you need it wrapped by a certain date. On the pre-owned market, you can get the precise watch you’re after immediately, frequently at stronger value than retail.”

Timing Helps, Fundamentals Win

Whatever the season, Klausman reminds buyers that good timing supports the basics but never replaces them. Every purchase should rest on real completed-sale data rather than inflated asking prices, on authentication of the watch itself through hands-on, movement-level inspection, and on buying from a transparent seller who stands behind the piece.

“Timing is the bonus, not the foundation,” Klausman said. “The foundation is always the same: buy something you love, at a fair price, that you know is authentic and original, from someone accountable. Get those right in any month of the year and you’ll never regret the purchase. That’s our whole philosophy. Our job isn’t to sell you a watch, it’s to earn your trust. That’s been our standard since 1895.”

For buyers weighing whether to act now or wait for the quieter windows ahead, Goldbro Timepieces offers the same guidance it gives every client: lead with research, patience, and authentication, and the right watch, at the right price, will follow.

How Seniors Can Find Affordable Housing That Supports Independent Living

For many older adults, maintaining independence means having a safe and affordable place to call home. Finding affordable senior housing can help seniors manage living expenses while remaining connected to their communities and everyday routines.

The search should begin with an honest assessment of financial and lifestyle needs. Seniors and families should consider monthly income, housing costs, transportation, accessibility, healthcare needs, and proximity to family or community services.

Independent senior housing may be appropriate for older adults who can manage most daily activities but prefer a community designed for their age group. Other housing options may provide additional supportive services while still allowing residents to maintain personal independence.

Seniors with limited income should investigate income-based and subsidized housing programs. Local housing authorities, nonprofit organizations, senior centers, and community agencies may provide information about available programs and application procedures.

Accessibility is another important consideration. Features such as elevators, ramps, accessible bathrooms, adequate lighting, and transportation options can make a significant difference in long-term comfort and safety.

Families should also ask about application requirements, waiting lists, deposits, utilities, community rules, and additional fees before choosing a housing arrangement.

Finding affordable housing can take time, so starting the search early is beneficial. Comparing multiple options can help seniors find a home that balances affordability, safety, independence, and quality of life.

Mental Health Support for Veterans Experiencing Stress, Isolation, or Difficult Life Transitions

Life after military service can involve significant changes. Veterans may experience relocation, career changes, family adjustments, financial pressure, or a loss of the structure and community associated with military life. For those experiencing stress, isolation, or difficult life transitions, finding appropriate mental health support can make an important difference.

Stress can affect sleep, concentration, relationships, motivation, and everyday functioning. Some veterans may also experience persistent anxiety, depression, grief, trauma-related symptoms, or difficulty adjusting to civilian environments.

Support can take many forms. Counseling and therapy can provide professional guidance, while peer-support programs can connect veterans with people who understand military experiences. The VA offers mental health treatment and peer support for a range of concerns, including PTSD, depression, anxiety, and readjustment challenges.

Community organizations and Vet Centers can provide additional support. Vet Centers offer confidential counseling and readjustment services for eligible veterans and their families.

Veterans can also strengthen their support networks by staying connected with trusted family members, friends, fellow veterans, mentors, and community organizations.

Seeking help does not mean a veteran has failed to cope. It means recognizing that support can be useful during challenging periods.

Find veteran-focused information and support resources at https://hahnmarch.org/ to explore options that can help veterans navigate stress, isolation, and major life transitions.

What Is Personal Care Assistance and Who Can Benefit From These Services?

As individuals age or experience health challenges, everyday tasks that were once simple may become more difficult. Personal care assistance provides essential support that helps individuals maintain independence while receiving help with daily activities and personal needs.

Personal care assistance is a type of non-medical home care service designed to support individuals with activities of daily living. Caregivers may assist with bathing, dressing, grooming, meal preparation, mobility, medication reminders, light housekeeping, and other routine tasks that help maintain a safe and comfortable home environment.

These services can benefit many individuals, including seniors aging in place, adults with disabilities, individuals recovering from illness, and veterans who need additional support with daily living. Personal care assistance allows individuals to remain in familiar surroundings while receiving dependable help tailored to their needs.

One of the greatest benefits of personal care assistance is the ability to promote independence. Instead of replacing a person’s abilities, caregivers provide the right level of support that allows clients to continue participating in their daily routines.

Families also benefit from knowing their loved ones have professional assistance and companionship when they cannot always be present.

Signal Health Group provides compassionate personal care assistance services focused on dignity, respect, and personalized support. Our caregivers help clients maintain their comfort and independence while improving their overall quality of life.

Finding Trusted Veteran Home Care Programs for Elderly Veterans and Their Families

Choosing the right care provider for an elderly veteran is an important decision for families. As Tariffs and Rising Retail Prices Reshape the Watch Market, Buyers Turn to Authenticated Pre-Owned Timepieces — Goldbro Timepieces Explains Why

With new Swiss watch prices climbing and a new watch losing value the moment it leaves the boutique, Las Vegas curator Aaron Klausman makes the case for pre-owned as the smarter, more stable legacy asset

LAS VEGAS — A structural shift is underway in how Americans buy luxury watches, and Goldbro Timepieces is helping consumers understand it. With import tariffs and record material costs driving new-watch retail prices to permanent highs, a growing number of buyers are concluding that an authenticated pre-owned timepiece is the smarter, more stable way to own a lasting asset — one that skips the immediate depreciation of buying new.

“When a new watch costs more than ever and loses value the day you buy it, an authenticated pre-owned piece simply makes more sense,” said Aaron Klausman, CEO of Goldbro Timepieces. “You own the watch and the value — not the markup. Buyers are realizing they can acquire the exact reference they want, at a more rational price, without paying a premium just to take the first depreciation hit themselves.”

A Permanent Reset in New-Watch Pricing

The math changed quickly. For decades, Swiss watches entered the United States under low, stable import duties of roughly 2 to 3 percent. That norm was upended in 2025, when a new tariff spiked as high as 39 percent before settling at a formalized 15 percent — still far above the historic baseline and now widely regarded as permanent.

Brands responded with successive price increases. Across most major Swiss names, 2026 U.S. retail prices sit roughly 5 to 10 percent higher than late 2024, with precious-metal models absorbing cumulative increases near 20 percent once tariffs and record gold prices are combined. Rolex alone raised prices three times in a single twelve-month span, its January 2026 adjustment averaging about 7 percent — roughly 5.6 percent on steel models and 9 percent on gold. Industry analysts are unanimous on one point: in luxury goods, prices rarely come back down.

The Hidden Cost of Buying New

Those elevated retail prices are only half the story. For the large majority of references, a luxury watch loses a meaningful share of its value the instant it leaves the authorized dealer and becomes “pre-owned.” Only a narrow band of highly sought-after sports models escapes this — and those are precisely the pieces that are hardest to obtain new, often carrying multi-year waitlists.

“Buying new in 2026 means stacking two costs on top of each other,” Klausman explained. “You pay today’s inflated, tariff-driven retail price, and then you personally absorb the steepest, earliest depreciation. An authenticated pre-owned buyer lets the original owner take both hits, and steps in at a far more sensible price for the very same watch.”

Why Pre-Owned Sidesteps the Premium

Because tariffs apply to new watches crossing the border, the secondary market is not tied directly to import duties. As new retail prices rose, the gap between new and pre-owned widened, making pre-owned comparatively more attractive — and, for many models, more accessible. Dealers across the country have reported the shift firsthand, with some noting their strongest sales weeks of the year and double-digit growth in average pre-owned order values.

“This has been a rare moment where pre-owned offers not just better value, but better access,” Klausman said. “No waitlist, immediate availability of current, discontinued, and vintage references, and a price that reflects the watch — not the import math.”

A Stable Legacy Asset — With One Caveat

Having skipped the steepest early depreciation, a well-chosen pre-owned watch bought at a fair price sits on more stable footing, and functions as a genuine heirloom: a mechanical timepiece can be serviced and worn for generations, then passed on. But Klausman is candid that the pre-owned advantage depends entirely on one thing — authenticity.

“Counterfeits are more convincing than ever, and a genuine watch can be altered into something it isn’t,” he said. “The rule never changes: authenticate the watch itself, not the paperwork. Box and papers support a story; they never prove it. Real certainty comes from opening the watch and verifying the movement and every component.”

That process is exactly how Goldbro operates — authenticating every timepiece by hand, at the movement level, and pricing against real market data. “Our job isn’t to sell you a watch,” Klausman added. “It’s to earn your trust. That’s been our standard since 1895.”
